ARG Richmond Meta Recap

ARG Richmond is just a couple days away, and players are preparing for the first Regional featuring the new Expansion Set cards.

While much focus is being put on determining which and how many Black cards to use, it can still be very beneficial to take a look at some data from the previous Regional to get a sense of the meta and any indicators of deck strength or weakness going into this weekend.

  1. In this article, decks will be described using the follow shortcuts now that Black cards are available:
    • R = Red
    • U = Blue
    • G = Green
    • B = Black
    • Y = Yellow
  2. A deck is defined by not only its leader but by the colors present in the deck as well. Even decks featuring the same colors can be significantly different. This article will be viewing variants based on color, not by specific deck composition. But, for the most part, the same color – leader pairings frequently correlate to the same kind of deck.

Amazingly, the top three leaders had almost exactly equal representation at the start of the tournament!

Super Saiyan God Son Goku (Soul Striker), Bionic Strike Mecha Frieza, and Vegeta dominated the field in terms of representation, taking up 63.6% of the entire field!

While the Cell leader was fourth in terms of overall representation on Day 1, breaking down the Cell decks by whether or not they used the Cell package (Growing Evil Lifeform Cell, Evolving Evil Lifeform Cell, and Perfect Force Cell) shows an almost even split between the two types of Cell decks.

Now, let’s compare the Day 1 meta to the Top 32 meta:

Super Saiyan God Son Goku took a gigantic leap, going from 21.8% representation on Day 1 to a whopping 50% of Top 32!

This is a very strong indication that either the decks using this leader are very strong in relation to the other decks in the tournament metagame, or that the players piloting these decks are playing the decks very well (it can be both, too!).

If there was one leader to set your sights on, it should be Super Saiyan God Son Goku.

With such strong representation on both Day 1 and in Top 32, plus winning the entire Regional, it’s safe to say that you can expect the Soul Striker to be very popular at ARG Indy.

Bionic Strike Mecha Frieza and Android 17 managed to maintain its level of representation from Day 1 to Top 32.

However, the same could not be said for Vegeta, who dropped from 20.6% to 13%.

If we compare some of this data to past regionals, we can see some trends! Thanks to Joel Vugteveen for providing this data!
